If you've ever placed a print order and received an email asking you to review something before we get started, you've already experienced the proofing process. But what exactly is a print proof — and why does it matter so much? Let's break it down.
What Is a Print Proof?
A print proof is a pre-production preview of your final printed piece. Before a single sheet hits the press, a proof gives you the opportunity to review your design exactly as it will appear when printed — checking for layout, colors, text accuracy, bleed lines, and overall composition.
Think of it as your last line of defense against costly mistakes. A misaligned logo, a typo in your contact info, or an off-brand color can all be caught and corrected at the proof stage — before they're permanently printed on 500 business cards.
Types of Proofs in the Printing Industry
There are several common types of proofs you might encounter:
- Digital Soft Proof – A PDF or on-screen preview of your file, showing layout, typography, and color representation. Fast and cost-effective, this is the most common proof type for modern print workflows.
- Hard Copy Proof – A physical printed sample, typically used for large-format or high-stakes runs where color accuracy is critical.
- Press Proof – A proof printed on the actual press and substrate that will be used for the final job. The gold standard for color-critical work.
- Blueline / Dylux Proof – A traditional pre-press proof used to check layout and pagination, less common today but still referenced in the industry.
For most of our orders — business cards, flyers, postcards, and more — a digital soft proof is sent directly to your inbox.
Why Proofs Matter
Printing is a physical, irreversible process. Once your job goes to press, there's no "undo." Proofing protects both you and us:
- For you: You get peace of mind that what you designed is what gets printed.
- For us: It ensures we're producing exactly what you approved — no surprises, no disputes.
Skipping the proof stage is one of the most common reasons customers end up with printed materials they can't use. We take that seriously, which is why proofing is built into every single order we process.
How Our Proofing Process Works
At Odd Jobs Media, every print order includes a proof sent to you via email before production begins. Here's what to expect:
- You place your order and submit your artwork.
- We prepare your proof — a digital preview of your file, print-ready and formatted for your chosen product.
- You receive a proof email with a link to review and either approve or reject the proof.
- You respond — and this is where timing matters.
Proof Approval Timelines
We work with multiple production facilities, and each has its own scheduling requirements to keep jobs moving efficiently. Here's how our approval windows work:
- Fast-turnaround facilities: Your proof requires a response — approval or rejection — within 1 hour of receiving the proof email. These facilities run on tight production schedules, and a delayed response may push your job to the next production cycle.
- Standard facilities: You have up to 2 business days to review and respond. If no action is taken within that window, your proof will be automatically approved and your job will move into production.
Pro tip: Check your inbox (and spam folder!) shortly after placing your order. A quick approval keeps your timeline on track.
What Happens If You Reject a Proof?
No problem — that's exactly what the process is for. If you spot something that needs to be corrected, simply reject the proof and include a note explaining what needs to change. From there, here's what happens next:
-
If you're providing your own file: You can submit a corrected file in one of two ways:
- Via our website: Use the artwork submission form on our site to upload your revised file directly to your order.
- Via email: Send your updated file to orders@oddjobsmedia.com with your order number in the subject line.
- If we're handling your graphic design: No need to send anything — our design team will make the requested changes to your file and send you a fresh proof for review.
In either case, you'll receive a new proof before anything goes to press.
The Bottom Line
Print proofs aren't just a formality — they're a critical quality checkpoint that protects your investment and ensures your brand looks exactly the way you intended. At Odd Jobs Media, we believe every customer deserves to see their project before it goes to press, which is why we've made proofing a standard part of every order.
