Plastic Business Cards: 30 Mil PVC Costs, Finishes & Options
Plastic cards cost more than paper and take longer to make. Here's exactly what you get for that — and how to decide whether your business actually needs them.
The short version
- Standard thickness is 30 mil (0.030″ / 0.76 mm) — identical to a credit card. This is what "plastic business card" means by default.
- They cost several times what paper costs per card, so order quantity should match how long the card will be kept, not how many people you'll meet.
- The value is retention. A PVC card survives a wallet for years. A 16 pt paper card usually doesn't survive the week.

A useful rule: if you hand the card to someone who will decide within an hour whether to keep it, print paper. If the card is the relationship — a membership, a VIP tier, a high-value service you'll be called about in two years — print plastic.
Finishes and add-ons
- Glossy — the default. Highest color saturation, shows fingerprints.
- Matte — softer, more premium in hand, hides fingerprints, accepts pen.
- Frosted / translucent — see-through PVC. High impact, but keep text on the opaque printed areas.
- Spot UV and metallic foil — selective gloss or foil over a logo.
- Rounded corners and slot punches — required if the card clips to a lanyard or badge reel.
- Magnetic stripe or signature panel — for gift, loyalty, and access cards.
- Embedded NFC chip — tap-to-open contact, website, or payment link.
Artwork requirements
- Card size: CR80, 3.375″ × 2.125″ (85.6 × 54 mm) — slightly smaller than a paper business card, so paper artwork does not drop in unchanged.
- Bleed: extend background artwork past the trim on every edge.
- Safe zone: keep text and logos well inside the trim, and further inside if the card has rounded corners.
- Resolution: 300 DPI at final size, CMYK, fonts outlined or embedded.
- Avoid: thin borders. Any card trimmed slightly off-center makes an even border look crooked.

How thick are plastic business cards?
Standard plastic business cards are 30 mil (0.030 inch / 0.76 mm) — the same thickness as a credit card, defined by ISO/IEC 7810 as CR80. Thinner 20 mil and 10 mil PVC stock exists, but 30 mil is what people mean when they say 'plastic business card.'
Are plastic business cards worth the extra cost?
They cost more per card than paper, so they work best where the card gets kept rather than handed out in bulk: high-ticket sales, memberships, VIP and loyalty programs, trade shows, and professions where the card sits in a wallet for years. For a 500-card conference drop, paper is usually the better spend.
Can plastic business cards be written on?
Not with a standard ballpoint pen — glossy PVC repels ink. If you need a writable area (appointment dates, membership numbers), ask for a signature panel or a matte/frosted finish, both of which accept pen and are commonly added to 30 mil cards.
